2009-2010 Newsletter & Supplies List

We are so thrilled to begin this exciting year full of changes with all of you! There has been some movement among the staff at LMS, and we would like to introduce you to our fantastic seventh grade team! The Black Bears’ faculty is listed below:

Mrs. Amy Berube

Life Science
aberube@litchfieldsd.org

This is the year students have been waiting for! And I know because they were asking me in fifth grade, “When do we get to dissect?” Well, the wait is over, welcome to seventh grade science! You can expect lots of hands on learning as we delve into Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, The Classification of Life, Ecology, and Human Environmental Impact. Oh, and did I mention, DISSECTION?!? This year is definitely going to be interesting! We will be using new text books by Harcourt School Publishers as well as many other resources including online sources and trade books provided by the text.

If you need to reach me for any reason, please do not hesitate to email me at the above email address or call me at 424-2133, extension 1301.

Mrs. Nancy Brucker
Room 1
Ancient History
nbrucker@litchfieldsd.org

I am the newest member of the Black Bear Team (but not new to Litchfield Middle School), so here’s a little bit of information about me.  This will be my 14th year teaching in Litchfield.  My previous teaching experience includes teaching fifth grade here in Litchfield, teaching in Fairfax County, VA, where I taught Ancient History, and in Northampton, MA.  I received a B.A. in History from the University of Texas at El Paso, and an Ed. M. from Smith College.

History is my favorite subject to share with students, so I am eager to teach them about the important individuals, ideas, and cultures that influence our world.  We’ll be finding out about how and why the Ancient Egyptians placed so much importance on tombs and burials, why so much of our culture has its roots in Ancient Greek culture, how Romans were able to rule much of their known world, how the ancients interpreted their world through their many gods, and why castles are considered war machines.  We’ll get to do some plays, create artifacts, and relive some periods through simulations.  We’ll also be learning about the present geography of the regions where these ancient civilizations evolved.

If you need to reach me for any reason, you can email me at the above address or call me at 424-2133, ext. 1304

Ms. Jody Corbett

In language arts this year, we will be working with the Sadlier-Oxford Vocabulary Program and the Vocabulary from Classical Roots. In addition to lots of challenging vocabulary, we will be working with the Glencoe grammar and writing program and progress towards essay writing. We will also read several class novels, as well as short stories and literature circle novels. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to email me at the above address. If you are unable to, you may call me at extension 1322.

Mrs. Jeanne Henriquez
Special Services
jhenriquez@litchfieldsd.org
&
Mrs. Amy Paradise
Special Services Paraprofessional

Our team provides in-class support in content area subjects for all students, with focus on the accommodations and modifications listed in the IEPs of special education students. We also address the needs of students during “directed” study through whole group, small group, and individualized instruction.

Mrs. Faye O’Blenis
Room 27
Mathematics
foblenis@litchfieldsd.org

In seventh grade mathematics, we spend the year learning how to “think mathematically.” Students in seventh grade will be learning how to use reasoning and logic to solve math problems. In addition to learning the concepts for the basis of algebra, students will be writing about the concepts that they are learning. Students will be using hands-on activities and games to solidify the ideas learned in class. I believe that Math should be fun, so students will enjoy their Math learning experience in seventh grade. In addition, I will hold a weekly after-school help session for students who need a little more practice: More on that later. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please email me at the above address.

Seventh grade is an important year in middle school. This is the year when students are urged to become more independent and take more responsibility for their own learning. Your child’s agenda is an important tool for students, parents, and teachers to communicate as he or she establishes the routine.
