Litchfield School District News Article

September 10, 2021

Sept 10, 2021

Good Evening, Parents & Guardians, Students, CHS Staff and CHS Community,

Now that we have finished our second week of school, we are beginning to get into the rhythm of the school year.  Most of the bus and transportation challenges have been worked through, the student activities are both under way including clubs and organizations and athletics.  Please encourage your children to participate outside of their academic classes.  We know that students do perform better academically if they are involved in co-curricular activities.  We are still very busy during the morning pick up, so planning to be a little early so children are in classes by 7:35 is really helpful for teachers to get the school day efficiently started.  We have our upcoming OPEN HOUSE on Thursday, Sept 16 beginning with a Meet the Administration at 5:45 pm in the Phil Martin Auditorium.  While the Meet & Greet is not required,  we would love to have a chance to say hi and speak about the start to the year.  The official Open House begins at 6:00 pm when parents will attend their child’s Advisory, and then you will run through your child’s  “Skinny Monday” schedules for a meet/greet with classroom teachers.    This is not a time to discuss individual student performance, but please make sure you do speak to teachers if you want to have a more in depth conversation about your child and the class at a later time.  More instructions on the specific schedule will be sent out Tuesday evening.  Our first home football game is Saturday at 11:00 here at CHS.  We would love to have you stop by and support the team!  If you are looking for other events this week, please consult the athletic calendar below.

Have a great weekend everyone!  Bill Lonergan, CHS Principal

From the Superintendent:

Good Evening,

Wehave simplified our weekly reporting around COVID-19.  The new spreadsheet will be posted to our website every week:  LINK

As you can see, both CHS and GMS currently have low impacts while LMS has a medium impact due to a cluster of cases and increased student absences.  Combined with substantial spread in both Litchfield and Hillsborough County, we are STRONGLY recommending masks be worn at CHS, and requiring masks at both GMS and LMS.

Also, we have a desperate need for a CHS Spanish Teacher in addition to many other positions.  Please click this LINK and help us fill these positions.

Finally, on behalf of the Litchfield School District, I am pleased to announce that Ms. Jennifer Grantham has been selected as the next educational leader of Litchfield Middle School.  We anticipate a start before October 1st and know the community will extend a warm welcome.

Be well, Mike

Superintendent of Schools

End 68 Hours of Hunger:  End 68 Hours of Hunger and Litchfield Schools are pleased to inform you about a free, confidential food program which provides students with meals from Friday after school until they return to school on Monday morning.  If meeting the weekend nutritional needs of your child is challenging at this time, we would like to help meet that need.  All food is non-perishable and easy to prepare.  If your child has any food allergies, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate this need.  Nut products are included for those who are not allergic, but children are informed that they are not to open the bags until a parent can review the contents.  The bags are delivered to schools and students will take the bags home with them on the bus or at parent pick-up.  If you would like to pick up the bags yourself, arrangements can be made for pick up at the front office.

If you are interested in joining the program or learning more, please contact Elin Pelland, School Social Worker, at 424-2133 x 2215 or at [email protected].

School Photos:  If your child was not in school today (Friday), they can have their photo taken on the Retake Day October 22.  Seniors who are not going to be scheduling their Senior Photos at the Barksdale Studio or at a local site with Barksdale can have their yearbook photos done on the 22nd.  It is always nice to have these to look back on, and there is no obligation to purchase.

For Parents Dropping Off & Picking Up Students:  Our drop off and pick ups are improving.  It usually takes a few weeks to settle out.  In the morning, the closer students arrive at 7:30, the more challenges.  We appreciate your help to avoid the challenges then.  We do open the building at 7:15 for students and  they can access the cafeteria or the Learning Commons.  Our hope is to avoid overcrowding, minimize challenges, and eliminate safety concerns in the lot.

From Food Services:  The following are forms related to Free and Reduced Lunches in the Litchfield School District.  If you have received F & R Lunches in the past, please fill out these forms as we do receive federal money based on these applications.  If you have questions about this, please contact Lauren Crowley our Food Services Director at [email protected].    Also, as you are aware, the Federal Government continues to provide funding for Breakfast and Lunch  - each student can receive 1 free breakfast and 1 free lunch per day.  Breakfast is served in the lobby from 715-735, and in the cafeteria from 9-915 every day.  At  2nd breakfast, bottles of water and other small a la carte purchases can be made as well!  Any hot entree, grab and go salad, or deli meal, is part of the free meals if the student selects a fruit or vegetable.

Recognition & Appreciation

  • Thanks to Paraeducator Kelly Fraser for his September 11 tribute on Friday morning.  Assisting him was sophomore Emma Burns and we greatly appreciate her contributions to the tribute as well.  Thanks Emma and Kelly!

  • To all of the CF’s, our UA Coordinator, the Directors, and the other individual department contributors, thanks for your ongoing assistance related to the budget process.  There are certainly some heavy lifts in terms of targeting our various budget items, but your contributions are valued.

  • As we go through the start to this school year, the challenges for the school nurses are a little different than last year.  We are quickly getting into a rhythm, but thanks to Donna for ensuring our practices align with DHHS protocols and with the other schools.

  • Terrie Taylor in our Counseling Office and Michele Flynn at the SAU have gone above and beyond to manage buses for our CTE students.  It has been a challenging start for the bus companies as they are dealing with their own staffing challenges, but Michele and Terrie have solved some significant challenges for us.  Thanks Ladies!

  • Thanks to Win for his contributions to keep Kurt’s students engaged for the past 2 weeks plus.  You have done a terrific job of working with your students, and we appreciate your contributions here.

  • Welcome to Jen Grantham who is the new principal down at LMS taking on Tom’s position as he moved on to Mt. Vernon.  It is good to have Jen joining us in the Litchfield School District.
