Litchfield School District News Article

October 22, 2021

Oct. 22, 2021

Good Evening, Parents & Guardians, Students, CHS Staff and CHS Community,

As much as I love the summer months, I do enjoy the change of season to fall with the great colors and the shift to cooler temperatures.   Fall sports tournament games are upcoming.  Please consult the athletics schedule for tournament games and locations in the following link as well as in this and following Updates if you wish to attend: http://campbellcougars.org/.  This week coming is Red Ribbon Week.  See activities listed below.  On Monday, Nov 15, all students will be taking the YRBS at the start of their school day during Advisory.   We will be revising the schedule to accommodate the test and then all classes subsequently.  It will be done on student devices, so students should bring their devices with them fully charged.  See the YRBS blurb below for further information.  Kim Barnett, CHS Math Teacher, is currently working on a principal certification, and working on her practicum, so she will be assisting the CHS Administration Team with various management activities at CHS.  If you see her around at CHS events, say hi and wish her well with this.  We do appreciate her supporting us as she completes this work.  I hope you all enjoy the weekend!  Bill Lonergan, CHS Principal

From the Superintendent:  A Community Engagement Opportunity

The Litchfield School District has scheduled a Community Listening and Information session on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, at the Griffin Memorial School Gymnasium beginning at 6:30 pm.  This is one of several community forum events that are scheduled to present information on, and gather community input for, the elementary school in Litchfield.

Planning and design team members will be in attendance to present information to the community, listen to ideas, hear concerns, and answer questions.  This session will be interactive and engaging.

All members of the Litchfield Community are invited to join us to discuss our community’s elementary school.

Be well, Mike Jette, Superintendent of Schools

This Week is Red Ribbon Week:   We are continuing our normal 5 day schedule.  We will be having conversations with our students about healthy decision-making, and this is the purpose of Red Ribbon Week.  Please join us in that effort in your conversations with your children this week as well.  As far as theme days for the week, they are as follows:

Monday: Skinny Monday-  PJ Day

Tuesday: Day 1- Twin Day

Wed. Day 2- Wear Your Red Day

Thurs: Day 1- Sports Jersey Day

Friday:  Day 2- Halloween Costume (No masks though)

Parent Teacher Conferences:  PTC’s will be held on Wednesday, November 10 from 6:00pm-8:00pm in teacher classrooms, and the full day event will be Friday, November 12 from 8:00am-3:30pm.  These will be in-person conferences as we continue to “normalize” our daily operations.  A listing of assigned rooms will be sent out before the event in cases of overlap between teachers.  We will also be sending out the Sign Up Genius so that parents can choose times to meet with teachers regarding their school performance.  Also, keep in mind that Veteran’s Day is Thursday that week offering a break between evening and daytime conferences.

2021 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS):  The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) is a national survey, conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) every two years among representative samples of 9th through 12th grade students. The survey monitors six types of health-risk behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death and disability among youth and adults, including: behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence, sexual behaviors that contribute to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV infection, alcohol and other drug use, tobacco use, unhealthy dietary behaviors, and inadequate physical activity.

The YRBS also measures the prevalence of obesity and asthma among youth and young adults in high school.

In New Hampshire, YRBS is jointly administered by two departments, the Departments of Health & Human Services and Department of Education. High schools are given the opportunity to participate in either the random state survey, a comprehensive school level census survey, or both. CHS participates in both.  This allows us to see the random data from around NH as well as the school specific data.  It does not provide student specific information to schools or the larger community.  The survey is administered in New Hampshire schools during the months of October and November.  The data from the YRBS are used extensively by health departments, schools, and local area agencies to define areas of high health risk and to secure the resources necessary to address any identified issues, particularly through targeted grant money.  At CHS, in the past, we have targeted Health and PE classes about bike safety concerns, student vaping issues, and concerns targeting student drug use.  Again, this does not provide any student specific information to CHS or to any other agency.  If you have questions, please reach out to your child's counselor.

Access to the CHS Learning Commons After School:  This is a reminder that the Learning Commons is open after school until 3:30 Mon-Thurs for students needing space to work on assignments or collaborate with peers.

News from Counseling:  *The FAFSA is open and accessible to all families of the Class of 2022. Go to www.fafsa.gov to begin the process of filing for financial aid. All families should complete the FAFSA regardless of income. For any questions, please connect with your school counselor. November 1 and November 15 deadlines are fast approaching! Please remind seniors to meet with their school counselor for support! The school counselors met with Freshmen through Freshmen Seminar this past week. We focused on Naviance introduction and tackling the Career Cluster Inventory. We will soon be meeting with all freshmen to get them set up in their accounts.

College Visitations This Week:   Students should see Mrs. Taylor or a  counselor for permission to attend.  The following schools will be in guidance the week of October 25, 2021. Recognition & Appreciation

  • We want to show our appreciation to our student mentors this school year.  Thanks to Eddie Britt, Catherine Carignan, Anthony Holder, Brooke Reynolds, our returning veterans of the program.  Also thanks to newly trained mentors, Tavia Almeida, Caitlyn Ferris, Leila Gottleib, Matt Young, Mackenzie Shapiro, Jaedyn Sandquist, Ashlyn Chege, Juliana Picone, and Kailey Powers.

  • Staff mentors continuing to support students beyond the classroom walls are as follows:   Noah Benoit, Nick Sica, Julie Green, Brittany Milligan, and Cari Bruner.  We appreciate you going above and beyond to help students.  If you are interested in becoming a mentor to one of our students, please reach out to Bill H for information about how to start with a student.

  • I was able to catch part of a very interesting group chess match this week after school.  Teachers Bill Pothier and Noah Benoit made sure to involve all 8 students in this match.  This was fun to watch and it was hard not to offer advice and suggestions.  Each participant really had to change strategies regularly depending upon how others played before them.

  • To the chaperones for the Salem, MA trip: Denise Freeman, Aimee Gaspar, Patrick Keefe, Sabrina Noury, and Dawn Parker, thanks for providing this opportunity to students to tour that historic community.
