Litchfield School District News Article

October 15, 2021

Good Evening, Parents & Guardians, Students, CHS Staff and CHS Community,

Student Council officers came to our CHS Admin meeting this week to discuss ways to continue “normalizing” the school year ahead.  We appreciate Catherine Carignan, Kiana Henderson, Alivia Ashe, Matt Grieco, Eddie Britt, and Molly Dyer joining us and sharing their ideas.   We also want to make sure we recognize Kiley York as our October Student of the Month and Nathan Kasprzak, as our Star of the Month.  Keep up the good work, you two.

We are pleased with the overall PSAT testing day.  This is one of those days where coming in late to school was a challenge for some students who were not able to test as they came in after we had already begun the process. For Professional Development work this past week, we had all professional staff involved in either work with colleagues at the other schools such as school nurses and counselors collaborating, or some training student mentors, or collaborating within core departments on developing summative assessments and rubrics, and some working on vertical alignment between CHS, LMS, and GMS.  We also had a number of teachers take a trip to visit the Parker School in Devens, MA, a school like CHS also working on competency assessments and  rubrics.

The CHS Drama Club meeting was held on Friday after school.  Students interested in performing or doing behind the scenes work on CHS theater productions should reach out to [email protected], our CHS Theater Director for more information.  We want to remind you that Tournament time is coming up for our fall sports teams. Please see the schedules in these weekly updates to keep in the loop as they begin.

Please continue to check out the Litchfield School District COVID data:  https://www.litchfieldsd.org/CoronavirusInformation.aspx.  We do have one positive case at CHS going back to October 12, but the community member had not been in school, and contact tracing was not required.  Our school nurses are generally having very genial conversations regarding current COVID situations.  Occasionally, conversations are more difficult and adversarial.  We are asking for your patience and courtesy in these conversations, as we are following state guidelines to manage these to keep all students and staff safe.

One final request:  we have had drivers using the wrong entrance to the CHS parking lot.  All trafficking entering CHS should come into the south entrance and exiting traffic should leave through the north entrance.  We have seen an increase in the numbers of drivers using the wrong entrance.  Likely it is either visitors coming to events or community members who become confused.  We do want to keep staff and students safe, and these situations create significant hazards in the lot.   I hope you all enjoy the weekend!

Bill Lonergan, CHS Principal

From the Superintendent:  A Community Engagement Opportunity

The Litchfield School District has scheduled a Community Listening and Information session on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, at the Griffin Memorial School Gymnasium beginning at 6:30 pm.  This is one of several community forum events that are scheduled to present information on, and gather community input for, the elementary school in Litchfield.

Planning and design team members will be in attendance to present information to the community, listen to ideas, hear concerns, and answer questions.  This session will be interactive and engaging.

All members of the Litchfield Community are invited to join us to discuss our community’s elementary school.

Be well, Mike Jette, Superintendent of Schools

Recognition & Appreciation

  • Great job by Corinne Chew and Kiley York coordinating the club presentation for advisories on Thursday and Friday.  Thanks to Mike Perez for doing the behind the scenes work to accommodate this.

  • Students did a really nice job applying themselves to the testing process.  There were very few glitches, and more importantly, they were really cooperative during the process and after.  Thank you all 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students for your hard work on Wednesday.

  • Great job by Val Nelson and Terrie Taylor coordinating the PSAT testing.  That is a huge amount of work, and it was really efficiently coordinated.  Also thanks to all of the staff who proctored and also assisted with the other needs of Val and Terrie with only minor challenges.

  • I have to give a special thanks to Terrie and Carrie who were my brains and left and right hand during this! Also... special kudos to Joanne Ray and Kim Barnett for running around supporting the Digital rooms!!! Thanks to all the proctors, floaters, and support people!! Seriously, it takes a village and I'm SO glad to be a part of the Campbell one! - from Val
