Litchfield School District News Article

August 30, 2021

Good Evening, Parents, Guardians and CHS Community,

Welcome back, everyone.  It is good to get back into the routines of a new school year.  Before discussing school, on a personal note, My wife and I have spent a great deal of time with family, including our four month old, granddaughter Siobhan.  What a joy that is as we reach this stage of our lives!  And we got the great news that our daughter is expecting her first child in January.  It has been a summer of joy and hope in many ways.  I hope you all also took  some time for cherished moments with family and friends.

I mentioned in our staff meeting on Thursday that I love the routines of the school year, and this is a terrific time anticipating the return of staff and the students, and returning to classrooms, activities and athletics.  Now in my sixth year, one would think planning for the next school year magically all falls together.  Not this year.  Mike, Jodi, Josh and I have spent a great deal of time planning for the 21-22 school year, and as summer was moving forward, we were challenged by some late departing staff, including Jodi herself.  Please be patient as we are in the process of filling several final positions.   Our staff is committed to starting the year off on the right foot.  We are very much looking forward to our students joining us on the first day on Monday.

We do want to welcome the following new staff joining us this year for their first year at CHS.  Our new Counseling Director is Val Nelson who joins us after fifteen years in House 4 at Londonderry.  In the science department, we are welcoming long-time teachers Bob Moore and Lisa Moore (no relation) who both actually taught at Pelham for three years a while back.  Joining us in English is Nicole St. Jean who comes to us from Sanborn HS.  We also have Terrie Taylor moving from the main office staff to become the Administrative Assistant in the Counseling Office.  I am excited that a former colleague of mine, Dana Giampaolo, joins us to teach Spanish at CHS.  Taking over the teaching reins in the Family & Consumer Science program is Sue Rafferty, who formerly worked at LMS.  Also joining us from LMS is Case Manager Dennis Bernabei.  We also have a student teacher in PE/Health, Mike Harding out of Plymouth State University for the first semester.

Speaking of students for a moment, I want to thank seniors Elayna Montenero and Johnny Lewis who spoke with the entire district staff on Wednesday about our new Portrait of a Learner and how it has applied to their lives as students here in Litchfield.  We will be discussing this with staff, students, parents and community as we move forward this year, so it was good to hear their perspective on this.

One final thing, please remember that Monday will have two bus runs, one for freshmen at the normal pickup times, and one for the 10-12 grade students based on a 2-hour delay schedule.  There is a fair amount of  important information here to start the school year.  Please look it over before Monday.  Have a great weekend everyone!  Bill Lonergan, CHS Principal

From the Superintendent:

Good evening.  Please look for my back to school message on our Return to School plan that will be arriving later today.

Be well,

Mike Jette, Superintendent of Schools

Important Information for Monday

Here is what Monday’s Schedule will look like:

Mon, Aug 30, - Day 2 Blocks E, F, G, H

9th Grade Welcome:  7:35-9:30;

and then,

Two-Hour Delay for all students running as follows:  9:35-2:23

BLOCK  E 9:35 - 10:35

BLOCK  F 10:39 - 11:39

BLOCK  G 11:43 - 1:19

   Lunch G1 - 11:43 - 12:05

   Lunch G2 - 12:08 - 12:30

   Lunch G3 - 12:32 - 12:54

   Lunch G4 - 12:57 - 1:19

BLOCK H 1:23 - 2:23

Your Class Schedule:  Before you come to school on Monday, please either make a digital copy of your first semester classes and bring that with you.  That will be helpful to ensure you are in the right place at the right time as we start off the school year.  Here is the link to PowerSchool where you can access that.

COVID 19 and Masks:  Please look for the superintendent's message about our Return to School Plan that will come separately from this.  Because all of our staff and our students are eligible to get COVID vaccines, masks are currently voluntary here at CHS, although it will be helpful for students to bring them with them to school.   Under federal law, masks are required on school transportation, so they will be required on the school buses.   In some cases in certain classes, they will not be able to maintain 3 feet of physical distance, and in those cases, it is strongly encouraged to wear them.  This is likely to occur during lab experiences, in some classrooms where there are a large number of students, and at other times based on an ability to maintain a safe distance in the building.  We appreciate your cooperation with this, particularly as some students and staff are immuno-compromised.  We know we will see a fair number of staff and students wearing masks, and we want to be sensitive to the need for others to keep themselves safe if they have compromised immune systems or other reason for needing to wear them.

Buses:  The bus routes for this year are available in the following link

This year we have a combined bus run of CHS and LMS students.  This is different from past years.  Buses will drop students at LMS first and then come to CHS to drop our students.  In the afternoon, buses will pick up at LMS and then come to CHS for pickup, and then they will drop students off at their local bus stop at the school day’s end.

For Monday only, there will be two bus runs, the first for 9th graders at the normal time listed on the link.  The second will be for upper class students running two hours later.  Please be patient as the combined CHS/LMS run may provide some initial challenges.

Student Drop-Off & Pick-up:  For parents who transport their children, when you are dropping off your students to CHS, parent drop off in the morning begins at 7:15 am at the main entrance to CHS.  Please plan appropriately as this is a busy time of day in the CHS lots, and we want to make sure we keep students safe.  Pick up is at 2:23 pm after students are released.  Please keep in mind that this can be a challenging location in the morning and afternoon.

Students who drive:  Two important things: you need to have a parking permit to park in the CHS lot.  If you have not purchased one yet, they are available in the CHS main office.  Please speak with the office staff about when you can come in to purchase one and what you will need to bring with you.  Second, the first few days of school are hectic in the lot.  We expect that you will keep our core values in mind as you enter the lot and park in your space.  In particular, be RESPECTFUL of walking students and other drivers you encounter.  And drive RESPONSIBLY  The speed limit is only 10 mph in the lot, and when it is busy, taking your time and being courteous to others will keep everyone safe.  Thanks for your attention to this!

Schedules the First Three Weeks of School:  Due to the short weeks, the first two weeks are running on a different schedule from what we will do as follows.  The first full week of school is the week of September 13, which is when we will resume our normal weekly schedules.  Those adaptations are here:

Recognition & Appreciation

  • As usual, at the start of each year, we recognize many of our faculty for their anniversary years of service.  Receiving five year awards are math teachers, Kim Barnett and Sean Conley and Librarian/Media Specialist Julie Green.  Para-educator Jill Anderson has been working with our students for 15 years, and being recognized for her 20 outstanding years at CHS was PE/Health teacher Shannon Szepan.  I want to express to all of them my appreciation for their years of service to CHS.

  • I want to congratulate Coach Gibbons and the Girls Softball team for their undefeated season and NH Division III State Title win on Saturday. That is a great way to close out a senior year for our graduates and for the 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students.  Nice job by all of the student athletes and coaches with the support of CHS families and friends to make this happen.

  • There are a few more names among those helping out with Graduation.  Denise Freeman did her usual good job taking photos during the ceremony that she supplied to the admin and staff.  We also want to thank juniors Olivia Pilcher, Brooke Stoncius, Corinne Chew and Lily Adamakos for assistance as well.

  • Thanks to rising senior Matt Grieco who is working with Math CF Diane Angelini to start a Mathematics Honor Society next year.  The CHS Chapter of Mu Alpha Theta will likely be a “thing” when we return to school in the fall.  Thanks Matt!.

  • We appreciate Noah Benoit & Emily Post presenting at the June 14, Faculty Meeting, surveying students and staff, and soon to be surveying parents about enrichment and competency recovery time in the schedule next year.  This work is a strong contribution to changing the focus for students to be more resourceful in meeting their academic needs.

  • The Science National Honor Society published their first SNHS Newsletter this June.  Thanks to Lauren Dionne and Mrs. Ray and her SNHS students for keeping the rest of us informed as to what is going on in the sciences these days.

  • CHS Administrator End of the Year Awards were awarded at our Faculty Meeting in June at the close of school.  Congratulations to all of the following: Teacher of the Year: Joanne Ray, Principal’s Service Award: Julie Green, Principal’s Leadership Award:  Terrie, Sally, & Stacie, Extra Mile Award: Nick Sica, Unsung Hero: Drew Gora, Rookie of the Year: Rachel Phillips, Above and Beyond: Donna Boucher, Support Staff of the Year: Michelle Vecchiarello, Paraeducator of the Year:  Jill Anderson.  Thanks to all of you for what you do for our students!
